Personality is a combination of thoughts, emotions and behaviours which makes you unique. It is shaped through an interaction of genes and your life situations. The genetic vulnerability to developing a personality disorder triggers the actual development of a personality disorder. Inherited tendencies, called "temperament" interact with the surroundings in childhood, events that occurred, and relationships with family members, the type of parenting etc.
A person with a personality disorder has a rigid and potentially self-destructive or self-denigrating pattern of thinking and behaving in all situations. This results in distress to the affected person as well as to their loved ones. Persons with a personality disorder may not realize the problem because their way of thinking and behaving seems natural to them and so they end up blaming others for their circumstances. People with personality disorders can have frequent mood swings and extreme temper outbursts, difficulty making friends, problems in close relationships and often alcohol or substance abuse.
It is recognized that there are effective ways in which personality disorders can be treated including medication and psychotherapy. With treatment the quality of life of both the affected person and the family can be markedly improved.
A relationship goes through numerous phases during its life cycle, and it is obvious for it to have a few rough patches. The strength of a relationship is reflected in how the couples deal with rough patches and move ahead. The lifestyle of the people and the modern day thinking has changed the pattern of thinking of people in respect to relationships. This has turned the statistics for divorce and marriage upside down. Divorce and separation may be necessary in many cases, if the problems are not only circumstantial, but also irrecoverable and irreversible.
We believe that love should be given a chance, and that there are relationships that can be saved, if only the people involved take that first step and make that effort to save their relationship. And, this is where the couple therapy comes in. Our approach towards couples therapy is oriented not only towards solving the problems the couple is facing with each other, but to revive the feeling of love and affection they have towards each other.
Couples therapy helps couples of all types to recognize and resolve conflicts and improve their relationships. It attempts to help both partners see the relationship in a more objective manner. It helps identify and modifies dysfunctional behavior that can cause physical, psychological, or economic harm. If necessary, one or both partners may be prescribed medication if it is established there is an underlying mental disorder.
